1st Annual – EMBODIED WRITING WRITERS’ RETREAT

with Mandoline Whittlesey, featuring Sarah E. Green

October 2nd to 8th, 2011 in Burgundy, France

"Censor the body and you censor breath and speech at the same time. Write yourself. Your body must be heard." ~Hélène Cixous

We sometimes forget that writing, reading and speaking are physical events. They emerge from—and engage with—all aspects of self, which include a living body.

A few hours a day will be devoted to exploring somatic practices (from the Greek “soma”: of the living body). These are tools to explore the textures, rhythms and “minds” of our living body in subtle ways: explorations in anatomy/physiology, movement, sensation, and vocal expression, for example. They can help to ground our words in our subjective experience, to access certain states which lend themselves to more fluid expression, to shed light on our habits, open new pathways, and ultimately expand our expressive range to include the diversity within us.

In the privileged intimacy of a small-group setting, there will be plenty of time to write and receive feedback in group situations as well as one to one sessions with Sarah and Mandoline.

The atmosphere is friendly and informal and the number of writers is kept to 10 to ensure you receive the individual attention you desire.

NO PRIOR EXPERIENCE WITH MOVEMENT IS REQUIRED OR EXPECTED.

VENUE: the really big dream company (www.thereallybigdreamcompany.com)

The gorgeous landscape of southern Burgundy provides the back drop to this workshop. You’re bound to find insight, rest and encouragement in this inspiring setting. The event takes place in a beautifully renovated barn and accommodation is on site with all meals taken at the workshop venue. Food is home grown, home made or locally sourced and we offer a local wine tasting on your first evening.

Sarah Green is a Ph.D candidate in Creative Writing at Ohio University. Her poems have appeared in The Gettysburg Review, FIELD, The Cortland Review, and other magazines. She recently won an Iguana Music Grant and will record an album with Andy Cambria as the
bluegrass duo “Heartacre” in 2011. She is the recipient of a 2009 Pushcart Prize, and has been a semi-finalist for the Walt Whitman Award from the Academy of American Poets, the Ruth Lilly Poetry Fellowship, and the Discovery/Nation Prize. Sarah holds an MFA in Poetry from Purdue University. She has studied both classical and jazz singing with teachers from New England Conservatory, Oberlin Conservatory, and the Berklee College of Music. Voice on the page and in the body is an important part of her personal aesthetic, her activism, and her pedagogy.

As places are restricted to 10 writers, early booking is advised to avoid disappointment.
